Before the tour, you will be met by a guide at the address of your request and escorted to the car. This will start your two-hour trip to Staraya Ladoga. Staraya Ladoga is the first Russian capital. The first Russian fortress on the Bank of the Volkhov River was founded by Prince Rurik. Here is the oldest street in Russia – Varyazhskaya. You can also visit the Museum exhibition dedicated to the history of the fortress, the current St. Nicholas monastery, St. George’s Cathedral and the Museum of archeology in the house of Kalyazin.
Also, a mandatory part of any excursion program in Old Ladoga includes a visit to the famous Ladoga mounds. These mounds contain many interesting legends. The most famous of them is the story of the Prophetic Oleg, sung by Alexander Pushkin.
Other attractions in Staraya Ladoga include the active maiden assumption monastery, the Holy spring of Paraskeva Pyatnitsa, the 12th-century assumption Church, and the first-century Church of John the Baptist.
In the time of Peter the Great, all the powers of the city passed to New Ladoga, and old Ladoga became a village filled with historical memories. This land played a significant role during the great Patriotic War, because it was the Ladoga flotilla that helped break the siege of Leningrad and brought Victory day closer.
